Windows 11 Black Screen or Crash on Startup
Some players on Windows 11, especially after the 24H2 update, have found that Links 2003 either crashes right at startup or shows a black screen with music playing but no picture. This has been tracked down to a problem with how Links 2003 detects game controllers (joysticks/gamepads) on newer versions of Windows. This fix has also worked for players of other older games that used the same underlying libraries.
The fix is a startup option that tells Links 2003 to skip controller detection. If you don't play with a controller, you won't notice any difference. If you do use one, this will disable it, but should let you get back into the game while a permanent fix is worked out.
How to add the fix to your shortcut:
- Find the shortcut you normally use to launch Links 2003 (usually on your Desktop or Start Menu).
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Make sure you're on the Shortcut tab.
- Find the box labeled Target. It will show something like: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Links 2003\LinksMMIII.exe"
- Click at the very end of the text, after the closing quotation mark, press the spacebar once, then type: /gosnojoystick
- So the line reads: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Links 2003\LinksMMIII.exe" /gosnojoystick
- Click OK.
- Launch the game the same way you always have. The fix will apply automatically every time.
