Intel Graphics Adapters and Windows 7/8/10

While playing Links 2003 some people with Intel graphics adapters may see some graphic problems such missing blank spots or rendering issues. There is a solution to this but it is not 100%. The biggest remaining problem being that the aiming marker and ball flight are not visible in the top camera. There might also be some other minor issues depending on the card you have.

Update: Windows 10 seems to play just like Windows 8

First, make sure you choose a 32 bit resolution in the Graphics Settings in Links 2003 located under "Options". Next, add your video card to the Links videocard.txt file. Here's how:

***Please note, you may need to edit your videocard.txt file as an administrator. You can do that by right-clicking on the Notepad icon and choose "Run as Administrator".

1. Determine the Device ID for your video adapter in the Dxdiag.txt file.

  • Windows 7 - Click on Start then click on Run.
  • Windows 8/10 - Windows Key + R
  • Type DXDIAG.EXE and click Ok
  • When DirectX Diagnosis comes up click on Save All Information. That will save a file called dxdiag.txt to your desktop
  • Exit the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
  • On your desktop, open the dxdiag.txt file that you just saved
  • Under the 'Display Devices' section look for the Device ID value for your video card. For example, 0x0102. Write down this value.
  • Under the same section write down the device name for your card, ie "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family"

2. Add the Device ID for your video card to the videocard.txt file.

  • Open My Computer
  • Browse to your Links 2003 folder
    • Probably C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesLinks 2003 or c:Program Files2k GamesLinks 2003
  • Open the videocard.txt file.
  • Locate the following line in the videocard.txt file
    • Vendor = 0x8086  "Intel".
  • Move down to the end of the Intel section.
  • Create an entry for your video card at the end of the Intel section as follows but replace the information below with the Device ID and Name of your video card. You can find both in the dxdiag.txt file.

0x0102 = "Intel(R) HD Graphics Family"
DefaultBltNotFlip
NoCopyZInVidMem

  • Save the videocard.txt file
  • You're done!

Please Note: If Links displays an error about "minimum screen resolution required by Links is 800x600". you may need to go into your Intel Graphics Control Panel and create a custom resoltion of 800x600. Once you do that you should be able to start the game and change the resolution to something higher by starting Links 2003, click on Options, then Graphics Settings.
