Skins of Glory: The Links 2004 Story

By B.B. Larouche

Three men. Eighteen holes. $25,000. The game was Skins; the course was St. Andrews. Three members of the MGS Web Content and Community team were on hand to play for pride and cold, hard virtual cash. Who would come out on top? Would it be:

• Producer John Peoples, aka “Peeps” (screen name: “daddynathan”). By far the most experienced of the three in playing real-life golf, Peeps would try to bring his expertise to bear on the virtual grass of Links 2004.

• Staff writer Bobby Stein (screen name: “franklin beans”). Bobby is an experienced gamer, but what he knows about golf would fill a very short pamphlet—and leave lots of room for additional content. But would it matter?

• Editor Mark Diller (screen name: “MGSinsider”). Mark was the only one of the three to play with a female character—not that there's anything wrong with that. His hope was that, even if he lost, at least his character would be the most pleasant to look at.

The skills were low but the spirits were high. Read on to see what happened!

First Hole

First hole

Mark botched his first drive—not a good omen for the rest of the day—but with a good chip-and-charge on his third shot, he managed to get down in four for par. That meant that it would take a birdie to win the $500 riding on the hole. Bobby was next with what looked like an easy 11-foot putt. Was it as easy as it looked? See for yourself in this video (broadband/dialup)!
